When someone looks at a piece of art and says, “Interesting,” it usually means that they do not understand it. Of course I want my work to be truly interesting, but I want to be understood as well. By using the tools of art: color, shape, movement, composition I am creating something new. The strength of the art is not so much in its subject matter, but in its unique and personal interpretation. I am inspired by the simple things around me. It is a search for the extraordinary in the ordinary that compels me to make art.
If my approaches to subject matter are random, so are my choices of media. For most of my career my work was primarily made with oil pastels. Bright colors and erratic edges are notable characteristics. In addition, I have also explored stained glass, hooked rugs, colored pencil, chalk pastel, mosaics, ceramics, various printmaking techniques, frottage, and, of course, painting, which was my major in college. The spirit which ties these pieces relies on a folk-art aesthetic, built on the sum of these explorations filtered through my life experiences.
My work can be found in homes, businesses and public spaces, primarily in the Northwest. It has been published nationally as posters, cards, T-shirts, in magazines and calendars.
